When to record a legacy video

A lot of people wonder when the right time is to record a family legacy video. Usually, the grown children are encouraged to do it after a major life event, like one of these triggers. It could be after their parents sell their family home and downsize, it could be when their parents move into a senior living community, or it could be when one parent gets diagnosed with the early onset of memory loss or when they start to prepare their legal estate. But the biggest trigger is usually after the loss of their first parent.

This often means that the children try to record something with their remaining parent before it is too late. With all of us living longer, it also means that their surviving parent could be well into their 80’s before they make the time to capture all their important family stories with a video interview.

It is never too early to record a legacy video

So, my rule of thumb is that it is never too early to shoot a legacy video. Why wait until your loved one is suffering from the ravages of old age? The perfect time to create a video is when they are vibrant and full of life. You want their mind to be sharp. You want the memories they share to be clear. You want them to be energetic and to look good. Ideally, the video should be an upbeat discussion of their life which is easier to pull off at a younger age.

So, should you record a legacy video when your loved one is 60? Or 70? Heck yes! It is NEVER too early, but it CAN be too late.
