Telling your story:

an activity for senior living residents

Our message is simple; everyone has a story that’s worth telling.

In this interactive presentation, Legacy Video Stories Founder, Jim Cosco, tells why he’s so passionate about encouraging everyone to tell their own story. Jim talks about why seniors should control their own narrative while they can and covers simple ways they can get started. Whether through video, journaling, scrapbooking, or just conversations with friends and family, Jim always comes back to the same message– get started today and do it however works best for you.

THIS IS NOT A SALES PITCH. This is a meaningful presentation about how one can leave their legacy for future generations. It ties storytelling to moments, places, memories, and heirlooms that together create a mosaic of a life well lived.

This free senior living activity is for residents and their families. It is sure to provoke a meaningful discussion between generations.

  • Part One: Jim's Story

Jim explains how he started Legacy Video Stories after the tragic loss of his father. A professional video producer and filmmaker, Jim always wanted to sit down and interview his own father to find out more about the man who raised him.

Years passed while Jim kept busy building his production company and telling the stories of his clients, until tragically his father passed away before he ever had the chance to interview him. Jim started Legacy Video Stories in his father’s memory with the mission to help others preserve the stories and history of their own loved ones for future generations.

  • Part Two: Show and Tell

Jim ties the concept of legacy to everyday objects that take on a new meaning when they are associated with meaningful stories and cherished memories. Objects and possessions, no matter how small or inexpensive, become treasured family heirlooms when they are used, shared, and play a role in one’s life.

Jim shares examples of things that took on extra meaning to him after his father passed. We ask that seniors bring in things that are important to them as well and share with everyone why the item is so meaningful.

  • Part Three: Getting Started

We talk about ways to get started telling your story. Although we like video, we cover other ideas like journaling and scrap booking which is less of an investment. We do not steer participants to our services, but we encourage them to get started in any way they feel is best for them.

We cover common questions to ask themselves and encourage them to start with the simple things to answer before moving on to the more complex. The session culminates with everyone drawing a random “life story” question from a deck of cards & sharing their experience with the group.
